Trailer for The Midnight Sky (2020)

Trailer for The Midnight Sky, starring Felicity Jones, George Clooney, Sophie Rundle, Kyle Chandler and Ethan Peck.

Astronomer Augustine, who is in her middle age, has lived in remote parts of the world for years to study the sky. Shortly after its arrival at the Arctic research center, devastating events will occur and the research center will have to be evacuated. But Augustine wants to stay there and continue her work. In this process, he encounters a mysterious boy named Iris. Iris is causing the radio waves to become quiet. Meanwhile, an astronaut named Sullivan, who is on a journey to Jupiter, is returning to his home. Sullivan and his team are the first to go this deep into space. Their journey has not been going well since they have been cut off from communication with control teams. Therefore, it is a mystery whether they will be able to return home. Augustine and Sullivan’s paths will somehow cross.

In the film, which is based on the novel Good Morning, Midnight by Lily Brooks-Dalton, the cascade of cataclysms that consume Earth in 2049 are unspecified, but Clooney imagines they aren’t very different from the traumas that have defined 2020: widespread illness, environmental collapse, political strife. “The sickness of hate and the elements that come from that, battles and wars—that has been percolating for quite some time,” he said. “There’s the sadness [in the film] of what man is capable of doing to man and how easily it can just be taken away.”

There is a chance of salvation, even in the more dire world of The Midnight Sky. “I wanted it to be about redemption in a way,” Clooney said. “I wanted there to be some hopefulness in a fairly bleak story about the end of mankind.”
