Batman, one of the most iconic characters of the comic world, whose interpretations we have seen on the big screen so far, will be in theaters next year with his new solo movie. Written and directed by Matt Reeves, who made acclaimed films such as Cloverfield, Let Me In, War for the Planet of the Apes, The Batman will be the first solo Batman movie to be released since 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises. In the movie, which created excitement with the names he brought together both behind the camera and in front of the camera, Robert Pattinson, who has made successful performances in recent years, brings Batman to life.
Our wait for The Batman, which excited moviegoers even more with its first trailer released at the DC FanDome event held this weekend, continues. We have compiled the details that have emerged so far and what needs to be known about the film.
The Batman by Matt Reeves will not be an origin story. In other words, it will not tell about Bruce Wayne’s transformation into Batman, as Batman Begins did. But it will focus on a Bruce Wayne who is just beginning the road as Batman. According to Matt Reeves’ statement at the DC FanDome event, the movie will take place in the second year of Batman. While Batman is just getting to know himself as a hero since he’s at the beginning of the road, Gotham City will try to get used to this strange figure wandering its streets. Reeves points out that people in Gotham do not see him as a hero, or even fear him, because Bruce Wayne is just at the beginning of the road as Batman.
In the words of Matt Reeves, “telling a noir Batman story”, The Batman will focus on the detective side of the beloved hero. The first trailer released shows that Batman will have to unravel the clues that Gotham left him to stop The Riddler, who committed serial murders.
On the other hand, Reeves’ statements show that corruption in Gotham City will have an important place in the story. It is also stated that the secrets of the Wayne family’s past will be linked to this corruption and the Riddler’s murders.
The Batman brings together an impressive cast. The film stars Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as The Riddler, Colin Farrell as Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and John Turturro as Carmine Falcone. It has also been announced that the young actress Jayme Lawson, who has just graduated from Peter Sarsgaard and Juliard, will give life to new characters that are not included in the comics. However, it is worth noting that this statement is for misleading and there are theories that Peter Sarsgaard will give life to Harvey Dent, also known as Two Face, and Jayme Lawson to Barbara Gordon, who gradually turned into Batgirl.
Comic Books Based On
Although The Batman is not a direct adaptation of a comic, it has traces of major comics. Batman: The Long Halloween is at the top of these comics. It is known that at least part of the movie will take place during Halloween. Batman: The Long Halloween tells a story that revolves around Halloween, as the name suggests. In the comic, based on the story of Jeph Loeb, Batman tries to stop the war between the biggest crime families in Gotham, the Maroni and the Falcones, while trying to figure out who the serial killer named Holiday, who killed someone on vacation every month. The first trailer released shows that Riddler replaced Holiday in the movie. The fact that the film will be released during Halloween 2021 strengthens the connection with The Long Halloween.
Another comic that can be found in the movie is Batman: Year One by Frank Miller. Although the film is not a story of an origin, it also uses certain elements from Year One, which focuses on Batman’s first year in Gotham. Matt Reeves also pointed to this link by sharing a frame from the comic in recent months.
Matt Reeves, on the other hand, cited Darwyn Cooke‘s comic Batman: Ego and Other Tails as one of the inspiration for the film in his speech at DC FanDome. In this comic that focuses on the psychology of the character, Bruce Wayne confronts his dark side and learns the main reasons that motivate him.
Speaking at DC FanDome, Matt Reeves said that the corruption in Gotham City will have an important place in the story, saying that this corruption is not left with the police department, it is seen in every level of the city. Comparing The Batman to Chinatown in this respect, the director listed 1974’s Chinatown at the top of his inspired films. Reeves said that the Batman was generally influenced by the noir films of the 1970s, and cited The French Connection and Taxi Driver among his sources of inspiration.
Connection with Other DC Movies
At the DC FanDome event, it was announced that the idea of multiverse, in which different universes in which different versions of the characters live side by side, will be adapted to the cinema with The Flash movie. This paved the way for Ben Affleck’s Batman and Michael Keaton’s Batman to appear in the same movie. In other words, Robert Pattinson’s Batman can be linked with other DC characters and movies. Fortunately, DC has no such plans. Matt Reeves’s Batman movies will be a stand-alone production, like the Joker with Joaquin Phoenix, unrelated to other DC movies.
The shooting in England was suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak in March. However, with the transition to the controlled normalization process and gradually returning to the sets, preparations started to continue the production of The Batman. The production of many films has resumed and new sets are being built for The Batman, which will continue to be shot in the UK. The shooting of the film, which was suspended in March, will begin again next month. Some scenes that would normally be shot at the actual location due to the pandemic will be shot in the studio. However, Reeves stated that the changes made in the location change will not affect the story in any way.
Although the shooting of the new Batman movie will resume next month, this break of six months caused the date of the vision to be delayed. The film, which is expected to be released in the USA on June 25, 2021, before the pandemic, was postponed to October 1, 2021 shortly after the shooting stopped.
